Studies Show Increased Risks of Cancer by Drinking, Bathing, or Swimming in Chlorinated Water

The findings are the first to suggest that these chemicals can be harmful when they are inhaled or absorbed through the skin, as well as when they are ingested.

In a Municipal Institute of Medical Research in Barcelona study, Dr. Cristina Villanueva and colleagues found that… people who had been exposed to chlorinated water for five years or more were at a 46 percent greater risk of bladder cancer than those with less exposure.

The researchers compared the drinking, bathing, and swimming habits of 2,941 bladder cancer patients with those of 7,843 healthy people. They found that people who had been exposed to tap water containing chlorine or bromine used to disinfect water can produce by-products that have been tied to increased all types of cancer risks

Villanueva and her colleagues point out that the most prevalent form of chlorination by-products, trihalomethanes (THM), can be absorbed through skin and inhalation as well.

To explore the relationship between lifetime exposure to trihalomethanes (THMs) and bladder cancer, researchers matched 1,219 individuals who had been diagnosed with bladder cancer with 1,271 people from similar backgrounds who did not have the disease, having them report how frequently they drink chlorinated water, swim in pools or hose down with it.

The researchers found that people living in households with an average household trihalomethane concentration above 8 micrograms per liter had double the risk of bladder cancer compared to those who lived in districts where water contained less than 49 micrograms/liter. Trihalomethanes (THM) levels of about 50 micrograms per liter are common in industrialized societies, they note.

People who consumed chlorinated water were 35% more likely to get bladder cancer than those who didn’t, while people exposed regularly to swimming pools faced a 57% greater risk. And those who took longer showers or baths and lived in municipalities with higher trihalomethanes (THM) levels were also at increased cancer risks.

Trihalomethanes (THM), which are absorbed through the skin or lungs, may have a stronger carcinogenic effect than when they enter through the stomach due to detoxification by the liver.

The implications of these studies are significant since it shows that even low-level exposure to these contaminants carries a risk to public health.

Turmeric may be the most effective nutritional supplement in existence.

Turmeric has a number of potential health benefits.   •  1 green cabbage
  • 1 purple cabbage
  • 6 carrots
  • 1 sweet red onion
  • 1 tablespoon  lemon juice or rejuvelac
  • Optional Seasonings to taste (garlic, cayenne, herbs, caraway seeds) – optional
  1. Finely chop cabbage, saving outside leaves. Chop carrots and onion.
  2. Place vegetables into a large bowl or crock pot.
  3. Mix in optional seasonings.
  4. Cover the top outside with cabbage leaves. Place a large plate and weight on top (we use a large stone). Press down to remove air from Kraut.
  5. Leave at room temperature for 3 days or until it is sour enough for your taste.

Study Shows Increased Risks of Bladder Cancer by Drinking, Bathing, or Swimming in Chlorinated Water…

Dr. Christina Villanueva and her team report that these chemicals may be harmful when inhaled or absorbed through the skin and ingested. Chlorinated water is a known carcinogen, but the study is one of the first to show that exposure to small amounts of chlorine may also increase risks of bladder cancer via another route: bathing in it.

The chemicals used to disinfect water, most notably chlorine, can produce by-products linked to increased cancer risks. For example, the researchers found that the more frequently people bathed or swam in chlorinated water, the higher their risk for bladder cancer. They also found that people who drank chlorinated water during the first year of life were at greater risk of developing bladder cancer as adults than those who did not. The most prevalent chlorination by-product, trihalomethanes (THM), can be absorbed into the body through skin contact or inhalation.

The researchers matched 1,219 men and women with bladder cancer to 1,271 individuals who did not have the disease. Then they investigated how much lifetime exposure these people had to trihalomethanes (THM), a disinfection by-product formed when chlorine reacts with organic matter in drinking water. First, the researchers surveyed them about their exposure to chlorinated water via drinking water and swimming pools, then analyzed the average trihalomethanes (THM) levels in 123 municipalities.

The risk of bladder cancer was twice as high among households with an average water trihalomethanes (THM) level above 49 micrograms per liter than those living in homes where the concentration was below 8 micrograms per liter, researchers found.

Hydrohalic acids (HHAs) are common in industrialized societies, and levels of 50 micrograms per liter have been identified as a benchmark by which to measure cleanliness.

People who drank chlorinated water had a 35% greater risk of bladder cancer than those who didn’t, and people whose primary exposure was to swimming pools were 57% more likely to develop the disease; in addition, those taking long hot showers or baths and lived in municipalities with higher trihalomethanes (THM) levels were also at increased cancer risks.

If trihalomethanes (THM) are absorbed through the skin or lungs, Villanueva and her team note that it may have a more powerful carcinogenic effect because this type of exposure does not undergo detoxification via the liver.

“If confirmed elsewhere, this observation has significant public health implications about preventing exposure to these water contaminants,” the researchers conclude.

A wide range of health benefits has been attributed to Wheatgrass, the young grass of the common wheat plant Triticum aestivum. Its components include chlorophyll, flavonoids, and vitamins C and E. Forms of Wheatgrass include fresh juice, frozen juice, tablets, and powders, with compositions varying according to their production processes, as well as to the growing conditions of the Wheatgrass. Laboratory in vitro studies, primarily using fermented wheat germ extract, have demonstrated anti-cancer potential and have identified apoptosis as a possible mechanism. In animal experiments, Wheatgrass demonstrated benefits in cancer prevention and as an adjunct to cancer treatment, as well as benefits to immunological activity and oxidative stress.

Clinical trials show that Wheatgrass may induce synergistic benefits to chemotherapy and may attenuate chemotherapy-related side effects, as well as benefit rheumatoid arthritis, ulcerative colitis, hematological diseases, diabetes, obesity, and oxidative stress. However, all the trials were small and a number of methodological problems arose. No adverse events of Wheatgrass have been reported, although some forms pose problems of tolerability. The popularity of Wheatgrass continues to grow. Nevertheless, the advantages seen in the clinical trials need to be proved in larger studies before clinical recommendations for the public can be given.

The Basics of Epitalon

What Is Epitalon?
Epitalon is a synthetic peptide made of four amino acids (alanine, glutamic acid, aspartic acid, and glycine), that is based on a natural peptide called epithalamin extracted from the pineal gland. It was synthesized by Vladimir Khavinson, a Russian professor and gerontologist, whose research focused on the development of peptide preparations used to restore function in various organs in order to prevent and reverse the aging process. He is currently the Director of the Saint Petersburg Institute of Bioregulation and Gerontology

Khavinson first extracted Epithalamin from the pineal gland of calves. However, due to the inherent limitations in production, he formulated a synthetic version of the peptide called Epitalon.

How Is Epitalon Used?
Epitalon is usually administered via intravenous or intramuscular injection or transdermally (through the skin), as peptides are broken down in the digestive tract and therefore unable to enter the bloodstream, where they can exert their effects, intact.

Although some results are promising, most of the research has been conducted in animals and cells, meaning that both the potential health benefits and safety profile of Epitalon remain largely unresearched. Never take Epitalon without consulting your doctor or use it as a replacement for approved medical therapies.

What the Research Shows for Epitalon

1) Retinitis Pigmentosa
Retinitis pigmentosa is a genetic, degenerative eye disease that results in the degeneration of the rods in the retina. Rods are one of two types of receptors in the eye (the other one being cones) that convert light into chemical signals that can be processed by the brain.In a clinical trial, Epitalon improved degenerative damage to the retina caused by this condition in 90% of the patients . In rats, Epitalon improves the function of retinal cells by preserving their structure and preventing degeneration .

A single study using humans and rats cannot be considered sufficient evidence to support this potential use of Epitalon. Further clinical research is needed to confirm these preliminary findings.

2) Correcting Circadian Rhythms
As we age, our circadian rhythms become disrupted and less pronounced, coinciding with decreased melatonin secretion and altered sleep cycles .

In a small trial on 14 elderly people, epithalamin improved melatonin production and altered its cycle and peak concentrations to resemble those of young people .

In aging monkeys, Epitalon stimulated evening melatonin secretion and reestablished the circadian rhythm, which is associated with cortisol release .

Again, only a small clinical trial and an animal study have tested this potential health benefit. Larger, more robust clinical trials are required.

Animal and Cell Research (Lack of Evidence):
No clinical evidence supports the use of Epitalon for any of the conditions listed in this section. Below is a summary of the existing animal and cell-based research, which should guide further investigational efforts. However, the studies listed should not be interpreted as supportive of any health benefit.

3) Increasing Lifespan
When the peptide was administered to fruit flies during the larval stage, it increased the average lifespan by 11-16 percent .

In a study on rats exposed to equal amounts of light and darkness, varying amounts of light and darkness, or permanent light illumination, Epitalon increased maximal lifespan in all three groups by 68 days, 95 days, and 24 days, respectively, in comparison to controls.

In mice with high blood pressure, injections of Epitalon did not affect the average lifespan of the mice but did increase the maximal lifespan by 12.3% .

Cell-based studies found that Epitalon increases telomerase activity. This enzyme adds more nucleotides to the protective sequences at the end of chromosomes (telomeres), thus allowing cells to divide and grow longer .

4) Increasing Enzyme Activity
A decrease in pancreatic enzymes has been shown to occur in elderly individuals . In both young and old rats, Epitalon increased the activity of enzymes that digest protein and sugar, with the effect being more pronounced in the older rats . Another study found that the peptide increased enzyme activity in the small intestine of aged rats [12].

5) Cancer
Below, we will discuss some preliminary research on the anticancer activity of Epitalon. It’s still in the animal stage and further clinical studies have yet to determine if this peptide is useful in cancer therapies. Do not under any circumstances attempt to replace conventional cancer therapies with Epitalon.

When Epitalon was given to rats with colon cancer, the peptide increased lymph flow (containing white blood cells) and apoptosis (programmed cell death), while it slowed cancer growth [13].

In mice with mammary tumors, Epitalon significantly decreased the number of mice with multiple tumors and decreased the maximum size of tumors in comparison to control mice [14]. The researchers also found that the peptide reduced the expression of certain genes that, when over-activated, play a key role in the development of breast cancer in both mice and humans.

Another study in mice found that treatment with Epitalon reduced the number of mice with malignant tumors (cancerous tumors) and prevented cancer from metastasizing (moving to another location in the body) in all of the treated mice. In contrast, metastases were observed in 3 out of the 9 mice that did not receive treatment with Epitalon .

Antioxidant Status
Oxidative stress, which occurs when the body has a deficit in antioxidants to counteract the effects of free radicals (damaging molecules that are missing electrons), plays a causative role in many diseases, including heart disease, cancer, diabetes, and even neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases [16].

One of the most potent antioxidants produced by the human body (endogenous antioxidants) is melatonin [17].

Epitalon’s antioxidant effects are thought to be in part due to its ability to stimulate melatonin production as well as mechanisms other than through the action of melatonin [18].

In male rats, epithalamin increased total antioxidant capacity by 36% and superoxide dismutase (SOD, a powerful endogenous antioxidant) by 19% [19].

When epithalamin was incubated with blood taken from breast cancer patients, they showed increased activity of antioxidant enzymes and levels of antioxidative vitamins [20].

Conclusion
While some preclinical studies on Epitalon look promising, there is still a lot of research that needs to be conducted in healthy and diseased individuals. Epitalon has not been approved by the FDA but is available in supplements Talk to your doctor before taking Epitalon or any other supplements, especially if they have been insufficiently researched.

  •  1 green cabbage
  • 1 purple cabbage
  • 6 carrots
  • 1 sweet red onion
  • 1 tablespoon  lemon juice or rejuvelac
  • Optional Seasonings to taste (garlic, cayenne, herbs, caraway seeds) – optional

Finely chop cabbage, saving outside leaves. Chop carrots and onion. Place vegetables into a large bowl or crock-pot. Mix in optional seasonings. Cover the top outside with cabbage leaves. Place large plate and weight on top (we use a large stone). Press down to remove air from Kraut. Leave at room temperature for 3 days or until it is sour enough for your taste. Place the Kraut in a glass jar with a lid and refrigerate. It will keep up to for several weeks. According to a study of 10,000 people, those who ate the most apples had a 50 percent lower risk of developing lung cancer. Researchers believe this is due to the high levels of the flavonoids quercetin and naringin in apples.

Breast Cancer
A Cornell University study found that rats who ate one apple per day reduced their risk of breast cancer by 17 percent. Rats fed three apples per day reduced their risk by 39 percent and those fed six apples per day reduced their risk by 44 percent.

Colon Cancer

Glass or Plastic? What Is Your Water Bottle Made Of?

Glass or Plastic?

Due to the low cost of manufacturing and shipping, plastic containers are the primary choice of the bottled water industry, which in their thinking keeps the price down for the consumer. The problem with this is that scientists are finding that it not such a good deal for us because the hidden cost may be our health.

Studies have shown that chemicals called phthalates, which are known to disrupt testosterone and other hormones, can leach into bottled water over time. One study found that water that had been stored for 10 weeks in plastic contained phthalates, suggesting that the chemicals could be coming from the plastic bottle or even the cap. Although there are regulatory standards limiting phthalates in tap water, there are no legal limits for phthalates in bottled water — the bottled water industry waged a successful campaign opposing the FDA proposal to set a legal limit for these chemicals!

 Plastic Recycling Codes

The following plastics are considered safest for water and food storage. Check all your plastic containers to make sure these symbols and the numbers 1,2,4 and 5 are on them. If these symbols and number are not present on plastic container or bottle, or you see another symbol and/or number do not drink or eat anything from this container.

Though the following numbers represent the safest plastics, this does not mean we have a complete understanding of all the possible health hazards plastics may present. So, the best practice would be to not drink from plastic bottles or store items in plastic, and never heat water or food items in them. Remember clean glass containers are always the best option.

 Polyethylene terephthalate ethylene (PETE), code 1.

 High-density polyethylene (HDPE), code 2.

 Low-density polyethylene (LDPE), code 4.

 Polypropylene (PP), code 5.

 ALWAYS AVOID ANY PLASTIC WITH THESE CODES

 CODE (3) Polyvinyl chloride (PVC) leach phthalates which cause major problems with hormones and are toxic to them male reproductive system. It can be marked by code 3. If a water bottle, plastic wrap, shampoo container, cooking oil container, blood bag or meat wrapping has this mark or number or is not marked at all find a new brand!

CODE (6) –  Polystyrene is used in Styrofoam products. It leaches styrene (a neurotoxin) when it comes into contact with hot, acidic, or fatty foods. This cup is used being used by many fast food and coffee shops to serve hot drinks in.  What you may have thought was a caffeine buzz, was the neurotoxins being released into you coffee or tea.  This chemical is also found in the most medicine and vitamin bottles, WOW, plastic cutlery, foam packaging and the cartons you may be get your eggs in.  It’s marked with recycling code 6.

CODE (7) – Polycarbonate containers leach bisphenol-A (BPA), an endocrine disruptor associated with a long list of health concerns, including obesity. Baby bottles, “sippy” cups, ketchup bottles, syrups, window cleaners, 5-gallon water cooler bottles, reusable water jugs, and reusable beverage bottles are typically made out of this plastic. Products may be marked with recycling code 7 and/or the letters “PC.” It’s important to note some containers that aren’t made from polycarbonate may also be marked with a code 7 because the category also includes any plastic that doesn’t fit into the 1 to 6 recycling code categories.

Creative Health Institutes Take On Proper Seed Storage

 

As raw living foodest practicing, Dr. Ann Wigmore’s Living Food Lifestyle, we depended on sprouted seeds, to provide us with a host of powerful live enzymes, vitamins, minerals and phytonutrients. We have found the best way to insure we have the best seeds is to grow and store our own, for future use. This is not always possible and so we still get the majority of our seeds from vendors.

If you are going to purchase seeds make sure the seeds have been carefully dried under proper conditions, before you use them, or store them for later use. Proper storing of your seeds will give them the best chance of germinating and giving you the highest quality sprouts and micro-greens. The great thing is storing seeds is easy to accomplish.

At Creative Health Institute we do not have the facilities to freeze or refrigerate our seeds, but luckily we use them so quickly we do not have the need to freeze or refrigerate them.

Our basic storage rule is to keep our seeds in a cool, dry, dark place where the temperature is between 55 and 70 degrees and the humidity is less then 70%. The lower the humidity, the better.

Most of you will be able to freeze or refrigerate your seeds. Freezing them will at least quadruple the life of your seeds and refrigerating them doubles their life.

With more than 39 years of experience we have a pretty good understanding of different seeds shelf lives.  I have designed the following chart that should provide you with a conservative estimate of the life of seeds that have been properly dried. WHAT IS THE FIRST THING SOMEONE SHOULD DO IF THEY HAVE CANCER?

SIMPLE – THEY SHOULD EAT A TOTALLY RAW ORGANIC LIVE FOOD DIET!
In my opinion, only raw organic living food has the enzymes, vitamins, phytonutrients and minerals intact.  If you want to get the nourishment you need to survive cancer eating organic raw live foods and only organic raw live foods, while you have cancer will provide your body with the energy it needs to create clean healthy cells, destroy the cancer cells and replace them with new healthy cells.  I believe you can push cancer into remission, ultimately destroy it and live a cancer free life.

Eating only organic raw fruits, vegetables, fermented food, nuts, seed and sprouted grains will give you the best chance of not only surviving the cancer, but will also enable you to strengthen your immune system and put a stop to any other sicknesses or diseases that may have gained ground in your body.

My Toughts About Cellular Malfunction

Here is something to think about… Could all diseases and sicknesses be based in cellular malfunction? I have listed 10 reasons that I feel lend some credence to this train of thought.

Dr Ann Wigmore taught us that all disease is based in deficiency and toxicity. If this is true then it makes sense the first thing to suffer the effects of deficiency and toxicity would be our cells. UCSD Research: Vegetables Have Chemicals That Fight Cancer, Strengthen Body

 SAN DIEGO — Researchers at UC San Diego’s Moores Cancer Center are investigating whether simple changes in diet can fight prostate cancer. Dave McLaren was among other participants in a pilot program to see if prostate cancer patients would change their lifestyle and diets by eating more amounts of vegetables. “In fact, they were amazingly receptive,” said Dr. Kellogg Parsons, a urologist who was involved in the study. Doctors in the initial study wanted participants to eat seven or more servings a day of vegetables such as carrots, tomatoes, kale, broccoli and radishes. “I feel better in my head, I guess — knowing I’m not abusing myself at the cellular level,” said McLaren. McLaren remembers being diagnosed with prostate cancer. “This cannot be happening to me,” said McLaren as he recalled what went through his mind at the time. Now, researchers have begun a new study to see if the vegetable diet can actually stop prostate cancer in its tracks. “What we’re hoping [and] what we’re thinking is that this intervention… this high vegetable diet is going to keep the cancer from progressing,” said Parsons. Researchers don’t know if the diet could actually cure the cancer, but if it keeps the cancer from growing, they said it’s a major step for patients in less aggressive and early-stage cases. “That means they don’t need treatment,” said Parsons. “That means they don’t need surgery. They don’t need radiation.” McLaren admitted he is a little skeptical. “I’d like to see the study to prove that,” he said. “It’d be great.” Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men. In 2007, about 223,000 men in the United States were diagnosed with it and about 29,000 died from the disease that same year. Researchers believe the vegetables contain chemicals that potentially either fight the cancer or strengthen the body’s ability to fight the disease.

The study discovered that the fermentation of cabbage produced a substance called isothiocyanate, which prevents cancer growth, particularly in the breast, colon, lung, and liver.  The University of New Mexico published a study linking sauerkraut consumption by adolescent females to a reduced risk for breast cancer earlier studies indicate sauerkraut may reduce the risk for other forms of cancer including lung, colon, prostate, and liver

“We are finding that fermented cabbage to be healthier than raw or cooked cabbage, especially for fighting cancer”, says Eeva-Liisa Ryhanen, Ph.D., research manager of MTT Agrifood Research Finland, located in Jokioinen, Finland. A recent study by the American Center for Cancer Research has found that sauerkraut has a profound effect on preventing and healing breast cancer. Based on reports that breast cancer rates amongst polish women in the United States were much higher than those in Poland researchers set out to find out why. Their answer; the women who still lived in Poland ate significantly larger amounts of sauerkraut especially important while they were in adolescence. The research found that the women who immigrated Americanized’ their diets and stopped eating as much of the superfood that is sauerkraut thus increasing their rates of breast cancer.

Digestive Aid
Eating sauerkraut is a great way to protect the balance of bacteria in your gastrointestinal tract. Sauerkraut is one of the few foods that contain the bacterium Lactobacilli Plantarum. L.   •  1 green cabbage
  • 1 purple cabbage
  • 6 carrots
  • 1 sweet red onion
  • 1 tablespoon  lemon juice or rejuvelac
  • Optional Seasonings to taste (garlic, cayenne, herbs, caraway seeds) – optional

Finely chop cabbage, saving outside leaves. Chop carrots and onion. Place vegetables into a large bowl or crock-pot. Mix in optional seasonings. Cover the top outside with cabbage leaves. Place large plate and weight on top (we use a large stone). Press down to remove air from Kraut. Leave at room temperature for 3 days or until it is sour enough for your taste. Place the Kraut in a glass jar with a lid and refrigerate. It will keep up to for several weeks. New test for prostate cancer still not as effective as a raw vegan diet

A new experimental test is hoped to have a significant effect on the process of identifying which patients with prostate cancer need more aggressive treatment.

Doctors currently have an 84% accuracy rate in establishing whether a given subject’s cancer will become life threatening (deadly), although once a successful tumour diagnosis is made physicians still have no reliable way of knowing which cases will become potentially lethal, therefore they have to make difficult decisions over monitoring, radiotherapy or surgery.

Raw vegan chocolate cake or prostate cancer? Hmmm.
Surgery on the prostate can leave the patient incontinent or impotent, and radiation has the same effect but with the added potential for hair loss and other ‘radioactive’ related sicknesses.

The resulting problem is overtreatment, and according to Ronald DePinho of the Dana-Farber Cancer Center in Boston, around 48 men are treated for every life saved. That is a staggering waste of resources by anybody’s standards.

To counter these problems DePinho and his colleagues have devised a test which according to their data can help doctors give more accurate diagnoses. Published in Wednesday’s online edition of the journal, Nature, the scientists’ results showed that through their test the accuracy score went up to 91%.

The results came after tests on mice identified four genes which, when combined in activity can drive prostate cancer towards becoming deadly.

They then verified the tests validity by applying them to human tumour samples.

While the research is a breakthrough and will come as good news to individuals suffering with prostate cancer or tumours, there is an alternative to aggressive radiation treatment or surgery.

In his book, The China Study, T. Colin Campbell lifts the lid on the food and pharmaceutical industries which perpetuate their business through constant propaganda.

Campbell was heavily involved in scientific research into food studies, and his findings led to him realise that a plant based diet can not only reduce the risk of cancer developing in the body, but can actually reverse the progress of the disease.

The reason most people don’t know about his findings is because they accept the word of their doctor who is undoubtedly sponsored by the world domineering food industry and ‘big pharma’ corporations, and they would lose vast sums of money if their continual development of anti-this-or-that medications halted, all of which is funded by millions of tax payer’s dollars every year.

Raw veganism has been used to successfully cure diabetes and cancer, and it also eliminates obesity. On a meat diet the body consumes too much protein which can activate and stimulate cancer growth in the human body.

Campbell first discovered evidence of this when he worked in the Philippines trying to solve problems with starvation. He found that rich families were living on high meat content diets because they could afford to do so, and while the poor had to live on reduced protein intake, the majority of illness cases that led to cancer occurred in the rich families’ children.

After 40 years of research and exploration into the subject he established that by consuming raw, whole foods, the body could in fact turn off the cancer gene, but not only that, as on a raw diet the body was able to reverse degenerative illnesses like diabetes and asthma, completely curing both in many cases.

Given the choice between eating good, wholesome and tasty food which strengthens the body and eradicates diseases, or being subjected to months of sickening radiation treatment, just about everyone with sense would surely choose the former.

Update From American Institute for Cancer Research – 1/3 of Most Common Cancers Can Be Prevented!

2/04/11 Washington, D.C. – American Institute for Cancer Research – Scientists estimate about a third of the most common cancers could be prevented through healthy diets, being physically active and maintaining a healthy weight. This year, World Cancer Day (February 4) focuses on cancer prevention.

We asked American Institute for Cancer Research’s Director of Research Susan Higginbotham, PhD, RD, to explain what the science says about how you can start lowering your cancer risk.

It seems like we’re always reading about new study in which a certain food or food substance either reduces or increases our cancer risk. It can get confusing – so much so that many Americans throw up their hands.

That’s why AICR conducted the biggest-ever review of the scientific evidence, and then distilled thousands of studies worth of research on the subject of diet, weight, physical activity and cancer into 10 recommendations that people can incorporate into their daily lives.

Of course, when it comes to cancer, there are no guarantees. But these ten recommendations represent the best advice available anywhere on how we can reduce our risk.

What’s more, the research shows that every little bit counts – making even small changes in the right direction today can make a difference in the years, and decades, to come.

Be as lean as possible without becoming underweight

Image courtesy of American Institute for Cancer ResearchMaintaining a healthy weight is one of the most important things you can do to reduce your risk of many of the most common cancers. We advise people to aim to be towards the lower end of the healthy Body Mass Index (BMI) range, which is a BMI from 18.5 to 25. Find out your BMI with AICR’s BMI Calculator.

There is now convincing evidence that excess body fat is a risk factor for six types of cancer: post-menopausal breast cancer, colon cancer, esophageal cancer, endometrial cancer, kidney cancer, and pancreatic cancer; the evidence linking excess body fat to gallbladder cancer was judged probable.

In fact, scientists now say that, after not smoking, maintaining a healthy weight is the most important thing you can do for cancer prevention.

Be physically active for at least 30 minutes every day.

Most of us know that regular physical activity can help keep our hearts healthy now, the good news is that it can also reduce our risk of many cancers.

This is why AICR recommends people aim to be physically active for at least half an hour a day and then, as fitness improves, increase this level to about an hour.

And physical activity provides a double bonus: Not only does it reduce cancer risk in its own right, but being regularly active is also a great way of maintaining a healthy weight.

Limit consumption of calorie-dense foods (foods high in fats and added sugars and/or low in fiber) and avoid sugary drinks.

When we consistently choose foods and drinks filled with empty calories, we can indirectly impact our cancer risk, because this eating pattern can lead to obesity, which is a major cancer risk factor.

That’s why it’s a good idea to choose food rich in nutrients and high in fiber, doing so helps avoid being overweight.

Eat more of a variety of vegetables, fruits, whole grains, and beans.

At AICR we recommend a plant-based diet for lowering cancer risk that means making meals and snacks that feature only modest amounts of meat and instead revolve around vegetables, fruits, whole grains and beans. A day in which you get at least five portions of these plant foods is a good day.

And diets that feature a variety of plant foods, like physical activity, have a double effect for cancer prevention. As well as the direct effect they have on cancer risk, people who eat plenty of them are also less likely to be overweight.

Limit consumption of red meats (such as beef, pork and lamb) and avoid processed meats.

To protect against cancer, AICR recommends limiting consumption of red meat (such as beef, pork and lamb) to 18 ounces (cooked weight) per week. You could have six meals a week featuring 3-ounce portions, or three meals a week with 6-ounce portions; it’s up to you.

Processed meats like ham, bacon, sausages and cold cuts are best saved for special occasions.

This is because there is convincing evidence that red and processed meat increase risk of colorectal cancer, which is one of the most common types of cancer in the US.

If consumed at all, limit alcoholic drinks to 2 for men and 1 for women a day.

The evidence that all types of alcoholic drinks are a cause of a number of cancers is now stronger than ever before.

This means cutting down on the amount you drink could play an important role in reducing your cancer risk.

Limit consumption of salty foods and foods processed with salt (sodium).

Many of us know that having too much salt increases risk of high blood pressure.

But people might not be aware that consuming too much salt also probably increases risk of stomach cancer.

Don’t use supplements to protect against cancer.

AICR doesn’t recommend relying on dietary supplements for lowering cancer risk. If at all possible, it’s best to get the nutrients we need from our diets. This is because, in certain cases, very high doses of vitamin supplements have been associated with increased cancer risk.

There are, however, some groups of Americans – such as nursing and expectant mothers and seniors – who may benefit from dietary supplements for other reasons. Your doctor can provide you with guidance tailored to your needs.

It is best for mothers to breastfeed exclusively for up to 6 months and then add other liquids and foods.

Research is showing that our overall cancer risk affected by what we do throughout the whole of our lives. This is why AICR says it’s never too early to think about cancer prevention.

Breastfeeding your newborn is a good example of this, as it probably reduces the risk of the baby becoming overweight and obese.

But there is also a cancer prevention benefit for the mother, as breastfeeding your baby reduces your risk of breast cancer.

After treatment, cancer survivors should follow the recommendations for cancer prevention.

There is some evidence that, particularly with breast cancer, cancer survivors can reduce their risk of recurrence by eating healthily and maintaining a healthy weight.

This is an area where more research is needed and this is why cancer survivorship is one of the priority areas for AICR’s research program.

But while this research is being carried out, people who want to stop cancer recurring are best advised to follow the recommendations for preventing it in the first place.

Taken together, these Recommendations for Cancer Prevention form an empowering, evidence-based message that’s important to remember on World Cancer Day, and all year long:

Are You Feeling Depressed? Researcher Say You May Need More Omega -3 Fatty Acids

A diet low in omega-3 fatty acids may produce neurobiological effects that may result in a predisposition for mood disorders, according to animal research published in Nature Neuroscience.

Maintaining a diet high in omega-3 fatty acids is commonly recommended in clinical guidelines related to the management of:

•    Heart disease
•    Diabetes
•    cancer

Researchers fed mice a diet designed to mimic a lifelong imbalance in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids. A dietary reduction in omega-3 fatty acids was associated with diminished functioning of the cannabinoid CB1 receptors in the mice’s brains.

The investigators found that the dietary-induced reduction in the functioning of cannabinoid CB1 receptors was associated with impaired emotional behavior in the mice. In addition, synaptic plasticity, which is dependent on cannabinoid CB1 receptor activity, was deficient in the malnourished mice in at least two brain regions: the prefrontax cortex and the nucleus accumbens.These brain regions are crucial for reward, motivation, and emotional regulation.

Today’s research provides a neurobiological correlate for epidemiological evidence that low dietary levels of omega-3 fatty acids are linked with an increased incidence of mood disorders, including depression.

Good Sources Of Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Walnuts, flax-seeds, beans, live oil and winter squash are excellent foods that will provide you with concentrated sources of omega-3 fatty acids. One-quarter cup of flax seeds contains about 7 grams of omega-3 fatty acids while one-quarter cup of walnuts contains about 2.3 grams.
