The Most Delicious Raw Vegan Brownies You Have Ever Eaten!

Equipment you will need:
Food Processor
High-Speed Blender or Coffee Grinder
Optional: Dehydrator

Ingredients:
2 cups Coconut water
20 Dates
1 Tbsp Vanilla powder
3/4 cup Cacao Powder
3/4 cup Carob Powder
1/2 cup melted Coconut Oil (melt in a dehydrator or put the jar in hot water)
1/2 cup melted Cacao Butter (same as above)
2 cups Ground Golden Flax (Grind whole flax seed in a high-speed blender or coffee grinder)

Directions:

  1. Blend all ingredients (except for golden flax) in a food processor until creamy.
  2. Combine all ingredients together in a big bowl and mix until a dough-like consistency.
  3. Spread batter into a baking dish and dehydrate or refrigerate for 2 hours.
  4. ENJOY every bite of pure love!

Really Rawsome No Bake Vegan Oatmeal Cookie Recipe

Easy to make raw vegan oatmeal cookies.

Time to prepare: 20 minutes
Time to dehydrate: 10 to 12 hours

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of uncooked oats
  • 1/2 cup raw walnuts coarsely chopped
  • 1/2 cup of macadamia nuts finely ground- (leave out a dozen or so to chunk up and put in the batter)
  • 1/2 cup cashew nuts finely ground – (leave out a dozen or so to cut up and put in the mixture)
  • 1/2 cup soaked dates
  • 1/2 cup raisins
  • 1/2 cup of coconut nectar or maple syrup or honey
  • 2 apples grated
  • 1 teaspoon of sea salt
  • 2 tablespoons of vanilla

Instructions:

  • Place the uncooked oats in a food processor and pulse two or three short bursts. If you don’t have a food processor, use a blender.
  • Transfer the uncooked processed oats to a mixing bowl and add the dates, raisins, walnuts sweetener and the grated apples. Mix the batter by hand or use beaters on low. Set the mixture aside.
  • In a coffee grinder grind the macadamias and cashews until they resemble a silky flour. Add them to the batter, stirring them in.
  • On a mesh dehydrator sheet shape the dough into cookies.
  • Keep in mind that the thicker you form the cookies, the longer they take to dehydrate.
  • Dehydrate the cookies at 110 degrees until they reach your preferred texture, around 12 hours.
  • Option: If you do not have a dehydrator, you can place the cookies on a baking tray and place in the oven on low with the oven door left open. Heat for 45 minutes.

Stop The Flu In Its Tracks & 6 Health Benefits Of Elderberry Extracts

We have developed protocols that address a whole range of ailments and diseases. One of our favorites healing foods that we incorporate into many of our protocols is Elderberry Syrup which also is always our go-to berry during the flu and cold seasons. A Recent Study of Elderberry Proving Its Value In Knocking Out The Flu

A recent study conducted by Professors Fariba Deghani, Dr. Golnoosh Torabian, and Dr. Peter Valtchev showed that the chemical makeup of elderberries can stop the flu virus’s entry and replication in human cells. The group performed a comprehensive study of the mechanism by which phytochemicals from elderberries combat influenza infections.

“What our study has shown is that the common elderberry has a potent direct antiviral effect against the flu virus,” said Dr.Golnoosh Torabian.

“It inhibits the early stages of infection by blocking key viral proteins responsible for both the viral attachment and entry into the host cells.”

The study did not use wild elderberries. They utilized commercially farmed elderberries, whose juice was applied to cells before, during, and after they had been infected with the influenza virus. The phytochemicals from the elderberry juice were shown to be effective at stopping the virus infecting the cells and was even more effective at inhibiting viral propagation at later stages of the flu cycle.

“This observation was quite surprising and rather significant because blocking the viral cycle at several stages has a higher chance of inhibiting the viral infection,” explained Dr. Peter Valtchev.

“In addition to that, we identified that the elderberry solution also stimulated the cells to release certain cytokines, which are chemical messengers that the immune system uses for communication between different cell types to coordinate a more efficient response against the invading pathogen,” said Centre Director, Professor Fariba Deghani.

Bobby Loves Dr. Anns’ Raw Vegan Better Than Tuna Recipe – Updated June 29, 2019

If You Like Tuna Fish – You Are Going To Love, Dr. Ann’s Better Than Tuna. You can whip up a pound of this fantastic food in about 10 minutes. (Its best to let it set for about 30 minutes before eating. If you can with that long) . Keeps fresh and delicious in the refrigerator for a week.

Recipe:

  • 1 lb. Almonds, soaked
  • 4 Bunches Celery Hearts
  • 1 Large Onion, Sweet
  • 1 tablespoon Plemento (optional)
  • 1/2 cup Lemon Juice
  • ½ Cup Dill Weed, dry
  • 2 tablespoons of Dulse or Kelp
  • 1 tsp Celtic, Himalayan or quality Sea Salt (or to taste)

. Use a food processor or Champion Juicer with the blank attachment.
. Alternate onion, celery & almonds if you are using the Champion juicer.
. Add remaining ingredients and mix well. Let set 30 min. Serve on a bed of lettuce, then garnish with tomatoes and sprouts. ( you should always be sprouting at least alfalfa sprouts)

Simple Healthful Herbs And Healing Foods For Your Children

One of our past guests had just become a new grandmother and she asked my opinion on raw living foods for children and if children could eat herbs when they were sick. That is why I am writing this article  — because she asked me to help her and because I thought some of our other past guests and readers could benefit from how I answered her questions.

Keeping our children healthy is our primary purpose as parents and grandparents.  The living foods lifestyle is the strongest health foundation you can give your child, yet there are times when parents must consider additional modalities when helping their children through an illness.  It’s my hope that you will never have to use any of the following herbs or concoctions, but if you do, keep in mind herbs can interact with other herbs, supplements and/or medications. For these reasons, you should only give herbs to a child when under the supervision of a health care practitioner. So if you do want to use these time-tested protocols, please consult your healthcare provider for diagnosis and medical advice before giving them to your children.

The following list of symptoms and the herbs and concoctions used to address them is by no means meant to be a comprehensive listing and only reflects some of the protocols I am personally aware of.  If you have found other simple protocols please feel free to add them to the comments.  I would love to hear from you.

Herbs and Protocols

Colic:  When your child cries for extended periods (1-2 hours), pulls its legs up to the belly, or extends its legs out and will not calm down they may be experiencing colic.  Mild, yet effective herbal teas made from Anise, Catnip, Caraway or Fennel and Peppermint have been used by mothers to soothe their children’s colic.

Colds: When your child is suffering from a cold you also suffer.  All of these herbs and concoctions will really help your child when they are fighting a cold. Your first line of defense should be used early and often. Echinacea is a great all round herb which provides immune support and may help protect your child from viral and bacterial infections.   I also like Anise as it will help with breaking up the mucus and make it easier for your child to breath and get mucus out of his/her body.  You may also want to make a Chamomile tea, infused with peppermint, licorice and lemon balm. This concoction will help calm your child’s cough and works as an expectorant. If your child is older you may want to talk to your health care provider about Mullen tea.

Constipation:  Good hydration is the most effective way to relieve constipation and this is easy to achieve when your child is getting plenty of pure water along with raw fruits and vegetables which contain large amounts of water. Also, a blend of Chamomile and Marigold teas will help prevent constipation, while gently helping your little one’s bowels to move.  Two other good herbs are aloe and Sienna both possesses laxative action and act on your child’s large intestine to stimulate peristalsis.

Cough: When your child coughs it is a sign that his/her body is attempting to an inflamed (croup- dry cough) or mucus congested airway (wet cough).  All of the herbal remedies I’m sharing with you will decrease inflammation, reduce mucus production and have a soothing relaxing effect that quickly helps stop the coughing.   Warm herbal tea with licorice, honey (only give honey to children who are at least 1 year old) and a little lemon juice is excellent for helping ease the tickle that sets off a cough.  Children of all ages who have coughs benefit from running a humidifier with eucalyptus oil in the water as it will break up mucus and soothe your child’s coughing reflex.  Make sure the humidifier is out of your child’s reach, or use a cold humidifier.  Also, if your child is over 1 year old give them a spoonful of honey with a little lemon mixed in before they go to bed as this will help alleviate soreness.  There are many wonderful natural herbal cough syrups that you can make or purchase.  Contact your health care for recipes and suggestions.  Don’t forget to keep checking your child’s temperature and to keep him/her hydrated.

Cradle Cap: Consists of dead skin cells which remain attached to your babies head. These dead skin cells block your baby’s pores and mix with body oils.  Cradle Cap usually appears within the first days of your child’s life.  Your child will not usually experience itching or pain with Cradle Cap.  Before bedtime you can rinse your baby’s head with a simple warm mixture of  Calendula and Comfrey, then let the baby’s scalp air dry, then massage organic olive oil mixed with lavender and mullein into the scalp and leave it in overnight, wash it away with mild natural soap and water each morning. The Cradle Cap should disappear within a few days.  Seborrhea- is a form of Cradle Cap that has formed on other areas of the body.

Diaper Rash:  Is usually caused by a diaper containing urine/stool and the material of the diaper rubbing against the child’s skin.  The way to identify this type of rash is to look at the folds of the skin (which are more protected) if they are not red, you have diaper rash caused by simple irritation.   Most other diaper rashes are caused by yeast or bacterial infections. The yeast rash will show up bright red, often with small red pimples on the outer edges.  The bacterial rash will have fluid-filled pimples which look yellowish with some crusty areas.

Diarrhea: As your child begins to eat different combinations of foods the bowels sometime will react and your child may get diarrhea. To alleviate the discomfort associated with diarrhea, you may want to have your child eat fresh grated raw or lightly steamed carrots, mixed with equal parts applesauce (include the apple’s skin).  I also like raspberry and peppermint tea blended, as this concoction helps to stop cramping, calms diarrhea and will also help lower a fever.

Earache: If your child experiences regular earaches or earaches which last more than 12 hours be sure to contact your physician.  Usually, earaches accompany colds and coughs. If you are a smoker stop!  Smoke from cigarettes plays a major role in many children’s earaches.  Before giving your child herbs or medications, try sitting him/her up and placing a cool washcloth on the ear that is troubling them.  If your child is old enough to chew gum give him/her a piece of herbal chewing gum, as this can sometimes lower the pain. As long as your child’s eardrum is not punctured you may want to warm some olive oil and add a few drops of grapefruit seed extract along with a drop of garlic and tea tree oil. Place a piece of warm cotton in the ear and lay a warm, slightly damp cloth over the ear and begin a vaporizer that has eucalyptus oil in it. You may repeat putting on warm clothes until your child’s ear stops hurting.  Should your child’s earache not subside, you should contact your physician.

Teething: Children seeking comfort from the pain of teething can use lemon balm as a tea or can chew on a washcloth soaked in the tea.

While I was the director of the Creative Health Institute, this wonderful food was served at every meal.  Some of the benefits associated with eating  regular and VegeKrauts  are:

Sauerkraut is an immune system booster
Packed with enzymes, vitamins, phytonutrients and minerals, sauerkraut has a wonderful effect on the immune system and has been used as an immune booster for centuries.  Sauerkraut contains, lactic acid bacteria and photochemical which are created and enhanced during the fermentation process. These naturally occurring, beneficial by-products of sauerkraut help boost the immune system which leads to a decrease in a number of health problems. The common cold, skin problems, weight gain, and tainted blood are all fixed by a healthy functioning immune system.

Sauerkraut is a cancer fighter
Sauerkraut’  is a superfood, with the ability to inhibit and even destroy cancer cells.  Studies published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry concluded that sauerkraut is a cancer inhibitor. The study discovered that the fermentation of cabbage produced a substance called isothiocyanate, which prevents cancer growth, particularly in the breast, colon, lung, and liver.  The University of New Mexico published a study linking sauerkraut consumption by adolescent females to a reduced risk for breast cancer earlier studies indicate sauerkraut may reduce the risk for other forms of cancer including lung, colon, prostate, and liver

“We are finding that fermented cabbage to be healthier than raw or cooked cabbage, especially for fighting cancer”, says Eeva-Liisa Ryhanen, Ph.D., research manager of MTT Agrifood Research Finland, located in Jokioinen, Finland. A recent study by the American Center for Cancer Research has found that sauerkraut has a profound effect on preventing and healing breast cancer. Based on reports that breast cancer rates amongst polish women in the United States were much higher than those in Poland researchers set out to find out why. Their answer; the women who still lived in Poland ate significantly larger amounts of sauerkraut especially important while they were in adolescence. The research found that the women who immigrated Americanized’ their diets and stopped eating as much of the superfood that is sauerkraut thus increasing their rates of breast cancer.

Digestive Aid
Eating sauerkraut is a great way to protect the balance of bacteria in your gastrointestinal tract. Sauerkraut is one of the few foods that contain the bacterium Lactobacilli Plantarum. L. It appears that the vital bacteria are created during the fermenting process and this gives the Kim Chi (Kraut)  its health-boosting qualities.

  •  1 green cabbage
  • 1 purple cabbage
  • 6 carrots
  • 1 sweet red onion
  • 1 tablespoon  lemon juice or rejuvelac
  • Optional Seasonings to taste (garlic, cayenne, herbs, caraway seeds) – optional

Finely chop cabbage, saving outside leaves. Chop carrots and onion. Place vegetables into a large bowl or crock-pot. Mix in optional seasonings. Cover the top outside with cabbage leaves. Place large plate and weight on top (we use a large stone). Press down to remove air from Kraut. Leave at room temperature for 3 days or until it is sour enough for your taste. Place the Kraut in a glass jar with a lid and refrigerate. It will keep up to for several weeks. Eat a ½ cup serving a day with meals and enjoy the wonderful flavor and nutritional benefits of this wonderful food! Another zero fat, healthy bacteria, non-fruit recipe to give you amazing health!

Another study shows that children with asthma who drank apple juice on a daily basis suffered from less wheezing than children who did not drink apple juice on a regular basis.onth. Another study at Cornell University found that the quercetin in apples may protect brain cells from the kind of free radical damage that may lead to Alzheimer’s disease.  When we eat apples we can lower LDL (“bad”) cholesterol. Studies have shown that people who eat two apples per day may lower their cholesterol by as much as 16 percent.

Power of Apples & Cancer Prevention

Lung Cancer
According to a study of 10,000 people, those who ate the most apples had a 50 percent lower risk of developing lung cancer. Researchers believe this is due to the high levels of the flavonoids quercetin and naringin in apples.

Breast Cancer
A Cornell University study found that rats who ate one apple per day reduced their risk of breast cancer by 17 percent. Rats fed three apples per day reduced their risk by 39 percent and those fed six apples per day reduced their risk by 44 percent.

Colon Cancer
One study found that rats fed an extract from apple skins had a 43 percent lower risk of colon cancer. Other research shows that the pectin in apples reduces the risk of colon cancer and helps maintain a healthy digestive tract.

Liver Cancer Prevention
Research has found that rats fed an extract from apple skins had a 57 percent lower risk of liver cancer.

If You Like Tuna Fish – You Are Going To Love Dr. Ann’s Better Than Tuna Recipe…

4 Bunches Celery Hearts
1 Large Onion, Sweet
1/2 cup lemon juice
1 lb. Almonds, soaked
½ Cup Dill Weed, dry
2 tablespoons of dulse or kelp
1 tsp Celtic sea salt

Use a food processor or Champion Juicer with the blank attachment.
Alternate onion, celery & almonds through juicer.
Add remaining ingredients and mix well. Let set 30 min.

Note: If using a Food Processor process the almonds first and then everything else.

Serve on a bed of lettuce, then garnish with tomatoes and sprouts. ( you should alway be sprouting at least alfalfa sprouts)

“Energy soup is the easiest, healthiest and quickest meal on earth!” Dr. Ann Wigmore

Equipment:  Blender

Time: 5 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups Rejuvelac (Easy to ferment probiotic drink)
  • 1 cup baby sunflower greens or wild dandelion greens if available
  • 1 cup buckwheat lettuce
  • 1 to 2 teaspoons dulse flakes (may also use kelp,or nori)
  • 1/2 avocado (“savorizes the greens”)
  • Optional  (1-2 cups of bean sprouts – alternate daily between mung, lentil and green pea)
  • Optional (one apple – for sweetness, and to help digest all the proteins)

Directions:

  • Place all ingredients into the blender and blend till smooth.

Better Tasting Energy Soup

Energy Soup – Your Way!

 Leafy Greens – Spinach, kale, swiss chard or any of your favorite leafy greens. Make sure to look for wild greens, as they have amazing nutritional properties.

 Raw Vegetables – zucchini, cucumber, asparagus, bell peppers, broccoli, or any other raw vegetable, adding at least 1-2 of them to the the greens. If you do not have a problem with night-shades try adding some tomatoes.

 Raw Fruits – Choose your favorite fruit. We love apples, pears and mangoes, but you can choose your favorite fruit to make your energy soup your own.. My standard is apples and I add only a single apple along with an inch of fresh ginger to make a pitcher of sweet energy soup.

 Flavor Enhancers – Dulse, kelp and other sea vegetables really being up the flavor of the soup and are an excellent source of minerals. Raw onions and garlic add delicious flavor to soup. Fresh ginger is always a favorite and when making a sweet soup,you may even want to add a touch of cinnamon or nutmeg to garnish your soup

 Fresh Herbs – Basil, oregano, Italian seasoning, or cilantro; experiment with your favorite herbs. You may want to use no more than two different herbs as you don’t want to make the soups flavor too complex.

 Fresh Lemon Juice – Lemon juice is extremely alkalizing to the body and adds a subtle tang to your soup.

 Nut & Seed & Avocado Cream – You can simply add the avocado to make the soup creamer. To increase the protein content of the soup experiment with seed and nut creams or just as some of your favorite nuts and seeds to the soup and blend in. My favorite is hemp.

 Unprocessed Sea Salt and Pepper – A little touch of sea salt will enhance the flavor of your soup. Go easy on the salt and use more duse or kelp as enhancers. Regular iodized table salt is heavily processed, so opt for sea salt instead. Crushed black pepper adds a nice addition, as does cayenne pepper if you like your soup spicy.

 Rejuvelac or Water. You need to add some liquid to get your soup to the consistency you like. How thick you want your soup is totally up to you. Here at CHI we always use rejuvelac as part of our soup base. Its amazing how wonderful it makes the soup taste, while making it I like a thick, creamy soup.

Relieving Autointoxication By Dry Skin Brushing

 

 Nothing Cleanses The Lymph System Like Dry Skin Brushing

 What is the largest organ in the body? THE SKIN!

  3. What organ eliminates up to 2 pounds of waste acids, daily? THE SKIN!
  4. When the blood has an over abundance of toxic materials, what organ will reflect this with problems? THE SKIN! 

Dry skin brushing is a swift and powerful way to enhance the detoxification process . Its easy, pleasant and yields tremendous benefits!

Dry brushing has been used for centuries by Scandinavians and Russians. More than 30 years ago, a Finnish doctor and one the greatest doctors of the century, Paavo Airola prescribed dry skin brushing for all his patients for detoxifying the lymph system and to exfoliate and stimulate the skin. Today,many health practitioners recommend dry skin brushing to open the pores of the skin and clean out the lymphatic system.  Dry skin brushing is not only a great way to maintain healthy skin, but also helps maintain a healthy body. The ability of the skin to open up the pores to excrete toxins is of paramount importance in helping to overcome autointoxication. 

When the pores are not clogged with dead cells and the lymphatic system is stimulated and cleansed, all organs in the body are better able to carry out the important function of eliminating toxic waste. Further, it increases blood circulation in all underlying organs and tissues. 

As part of a detoxification and autointoxication cleansing program, our guests combine skin brushing, saunas and warm and cold showers. Follow these steps for the highest level of cleansing:

  1. Skin brush before entering the sauna, remain in the sauna until in a full sweat.
  2. Take a warm shower followed by a quick cold shower
  3. Dry off all of your body and dry skin brush again – always towards your heart accept for between the bottom and top of your neck.
  4. Jump back into the sauna and remain to the point of flowing perspiration. 
  5. This combination of skin brushing, saunas and showers has proved to be a powerful method for eliminating waste and toxins from the body.

CHI recommends you dry skin brush, morning and night, before your enema, during the program, then once a day after the program is completed.

       I.        A long-handled natural bristle brush, with a removable head is best. 

      II.        When you first start be sure to brush the skin lightly. Always towards your heart accept for between the bottom and top of your neck.

    III.        As the skin becomes toned, you may brush heavier.  Women should not brush their breast.

   IV.        Start at the bottom of the feet using a straight motion. 

     V.        Brush in long strokes from the feet toward the waist.

   VI.        Brush from the waste to the bottom of your rib cage, moving the brush with clockwise circular motions.

  VII.        Brush the ribcage towards the heart.

 VIII.        Hold your arm out in front of you and brush from your fingers toward your shoulders.

   IX.        Brush up from the bottom of your neck to the top of it

     X.        Brush from the bottom of your neck toward your heart.

   XI.        Brush your skin until it gets a red glow.

  XII.        Women should avoid doing the breasts. 

 XIII.        Never wet your dry skin brush, accept for cleaning. Avoid sensitive areas and anywhere the skin is broken.

 XV.        Skin brushing should take about 5 minutes. Clean your skin brush using soap and water once a week. After rinsing, dry your skin brush in an open, sunny spot to prevent mildew.

Proper Showering After Dry Brushing

If you are not following the aforementioned routine, a shower should always follow skin brushing. 

  1. This will remove uric acid crystals along with any dead skin that has been loosened. 
  2. Always start your shower with warm water and end with cold. 
  3. Once the water is cold, do not stay in any longer.  When the water turns cold, let it hit your legs first.  Do not let it hit your heart or head first as this can cause a slight shock to the body. 
  4. Vigorously dry off your body.
  5. Though this is not a problem here at CHI hot shower temperatures create steam that can disperse toxic chemicals found in unfiltered water:   Therefore, avoid hot showers, if your water is not filtered.

      I.        Opens pores, removes toxins and dead skin allowing the skin to breath.

    II.        Increases blood circulation and healthy cell renewal.

   III.        Helps to stimulate hormone and oil-producing glands.

Day 3 – Greens & Apples – Juice January 3, 2012

 

Greens & Apples

 Makes 2 glasses

Ingredients:

  • 2 collard greens leaves
  • 2 kale leaves
  • handful of spinach
  • 2 stalks of celery
  • 2 – 3 Granny Smith Apples

Directions:

  1. Juice all ingredients in a juicer.
  2. Pour into a shaker with ice and mix well. Enjoy!

Health Tip: Eat your greens! This is such a yummy way to do it.  According to The World’s Healthiest Foods, The cholesterol-lowering ability of collard greens may be the greatest of all commonly eaten cruciferous vegetables. In a recent study, steamed collard greens outshined steamed kale, mustard greens, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and cabbage in terms of its ability to bind bile acids in the digestive tract.  Kale, of course, is another super green. The World’s Healthiest Foods reports kale’s risk-lowering benefits for cancer have recently been extended to at least five different types of cancer. These types include cancer of the bladder, breast, colon, ovary, and prostate. Isothiocyanates (ITCs) made from glucosinolates in kale play a primary role in achieving these risk-lowering benefits.

  8. Raw diet and juice fasting: First Medical Clinic of the University of Vienna – exclusive raw food diet ” – capillaries were slowly restored to a normal, vigorous condition.
  9. Raw diet w. minimal juices: “Humlegaarden” – Copenhagen – Dr. I Nolfi – exclusive raw diet – recover from all manner of diseases, including cancer, sterility, obesity, diabetes, heart debilitation, high blood pressure, rheumatism, epilepsy, asthma, and many others. Recipe for Disaster

Ninety percent of Americans’ household food budget is spent on processed foods, the majority of which are filled with additives and stripped of nutrients. Discover which common ingredients in the foods you eat pose the greatest risk to your health.    Grab the broccoli with cheese sauce from the freezer, the box of instant rice pilaf from the pantry, or the hot dogs from your fridge and squint at the ingredient list’s fine print. You’ll likely find food additives in every one.

Is this healthy? Compared to the foods our bodies were built to eat, definitely not!

Processed, packaged foods have almost completely taken over the diet of Americans. In fact, nearly 90 percent of our household food budget is spent on processed foods, according to industry estimates.

Unfortunately, most processed foods are laden with sweeteners, salts, artificial flavors, factory-created fats, colorings, chemicals that alter texture, and preservatives. But the trouble is not just what’s been added, but what’s been taken away. Processed foods are often stripped of nutrients designed by nature to protect your heart, such as soluble fiber, antioxidants, and “good” fats. Combine that with additives, and you have a recipe for disaster.

 

Here are the big four ingredients in processed foods you should look out for:

TRANS FATS

Trans fats are in moist bakery muffins and crispy crackers, microwave popcorn and fast-food French fries, even the stick margarine you may rely on as a “heart-healthy” alternative to saturated-fat-laden butter.

Once hailed as a cheap, heart-friendly replacement for butter, lard, and coconut oil, trans fats have, in recent times, been denounced by one Harvard nutrition expert as “the biggest food-processing disaster in U.S. history.” Why? Research now reveals trans fats are twice as dangerous for your heart as saturated fat, and cause an estimated 30,000 to 100,000 premature heart disease deaths each year.

Trans fats are worse for your heart than saturated fats because they boost your levels of “bad” LDL cholesterol and decrease “good” HDL cholesterol. That’s double trouble for your arteries. And unlike saturated fats, trans fats also raise your levels of artery-clogging lipoprotein and triglycerides.

Trans fats will be listed on the “Nutrition Facts” panel on food beginning in 2006. Until then, check the ingredient list for any of these words: “partially hydrogenated,” “fractionated,” or “hydrogenated” (fully hydrogenated fats are not a heart threat, but some trans fats are mislabeled as “hydrogenated”). The higher up the phrase “partially hydrogenated oil” is on the list of ingredients, the more trans fat the product contains.

Replacing trans fats with good fats could cut your heart attack risk by a whopping 53 percent.

REFINED GRAINS

Choosing refined grains such as white bread, rolls, sugary low-fiber cereal, white rice, or white pasta over whole grains can boost your heart attack risk by up to 30 percent. You’ve got to be a savvy shopper. Don’t be fooled by deceptive label claims such as “made with wheat flour” or “seven grain.” Or by white-flour breads topped with a sprinkling of oats, or colored brown with molasses. Often, they’re just the same old refined stuff that raises risk for high cholesterol, high blood pressure, heart attacks, insulin resistance, diabetes, and belly fat.

At least seven major studies show that women and men who eat more whole grains (including dark bread, whole-grain breakfast cereals, popcorn, cooked oatmeal, brown rice, bran, and other grains like bulgur or kasha) have 20 to 30 percent less heart disease. In contrast, those who opt for refined grains have more heart attacks, insulin resistance, and high blood pressure.

Read the ingredient list on packaged grain products. If the product is one of those that are best for you, the first ingredients should be whole wheat or another whole grain, such as oats. The fiber content should be at least 3 grams per serving.

SALT

Three-quarters of the sodium in our diets isn’t from the saltshaker. It’s hidden in processed foods, such as canned vegetables and soups, condiments like soy sauce and Worcestershire sauce, fast-food burgers (and fries, of course), and cured or preserved meats like bacon, ham, and deli turkey.

Some sodium occurs naturally in unprocessed edibles, including milk, beets, celery, even some drinking water. And that’s a good thing: Sodium is necessary for life. It helps regulate blood pressure, maintains the body’s fluid balance, transmits nerve impulses, makes muscles — including your heart — contract, and keeps your senses of taste, smell, and touch working properly. You need a little every day to replace what’s lost to sweat, tears, and other excretions.

Not So Sweet After All

But what happens when you eat more salt than your body needs? Your body retains fluid simply to dilute the extra sodium in your bloodstream. This raises blood volume, forcing your heart to work harder; at the same time, it makes veins and arteries constrict. The combination raises blood pressure.

Your limit should be 1,500 milligrams of sodium per day, about the amount in three-fourths of a teaspoon of salt. (Table salt, by the way, is 40 percent sodium, 60 percent chloride.) Older people should eat even less, to counteract the natural rise in blood pressure that comes with age. People over 50 should strive for 1,300 mg; those over 70 should aim for 1,200 mg.

Only the “Nutrition Facts” panel on a food package will give you the real sodium count. Don’t believe claims on the package front such as “sodium-free” (foods can still have 5 mg per serving); “reduced sodium” (it only means 25 percent less than usual); or “light in sodium” (half the amount you’d normally find).

HIGH-FRUCTOSE CORN SYRUP

Compared to traditional sweeteners, high-fructose corn syrup costs less to make, is sweeter to the taste, and mixes more easily with other ingredients. Today, we consume nearly 63 pounds of it per person per year in drinks and sweets, as well as in other products. High-fructose corn syrup is in many frozen foods. It gives bread an inviting, brown color and soft texture, so it’s also in whole-wheat bread, hamburger buns, and English muffins. It is in beer, bacon, spaghetti sauce, soft drinks, and even ketchup.

Research is beginning to suggest that this liquid sweetener may upset the human metabolism, raising the risk for heart disease and diabetes. Researchers say that high-fructose corn syrup’s chemical structure encourages overeating. It also seems to force the liver to pump more heart-threatening triglycerides into the bloodstream. In addition, fructose may zap your body’s reserves of chromium, a mineral important for healthy levels of cholesterol, insulin, and blood sugar.

To spot fructose on a food label, look for the words “corn sweetener,” “corn syrup,” or “corn syrup solids” as well as “high-fructose corn syrup.”

Raw Living Foods – What Are They?

 

Raw Living Food Gives Us The Power To Change…

  • Raw living foods are foods that contain enzymes.
  • Only sprouted raw foods are 100% alive. These are biogenic foods and therefore the most powerful foods, having life force of the germ still intact.
  • Un-sprouted raw foods are in the process of deterioration, due to enzymatic actions.  These are bioactive foods, they are ripe, mature foods, but they do not have the power of the biogenic foods
